  • Obsidian was so named from its resemblance to a stone found in Ethiopia by Obsius. Rainbow Obsidian is black obsidian that, when polished and exposed to a strong light, shows bands of rainbow colors. Rainbow obsidian is said to be the stone used by Nostradamus to foresee future events. Obsidian is formed when volcanic lava cools very quickly.
  • Obsidian is a natural form of volcanic glass , composed of various combinations of basalt, Andesite, Rhyolite, and Trachyte. Basic colours range from smoky gray to red or reddish brown, blue and black. Obsidian comes in a number of colours and patterns including banded, mahogany (includes streaks of mahogany coloured bands), rainbow or peacock (contains layers of iridescent colours) and sheen (colours such as gold, silver or blue sheen seen in certain lights).
  • Mahogany Obsidian is a rich brown colour with black spots. Mahogany Obsidian is found anywhere volcanic or where volcanic activity has occurred. Some of the places it comes from today are Japan, South America, Afghanistan, Mexico, and parts of the United States. In the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona, United States, a particular variety of Mahogany Obsidian called Apache Tears is produced. Hardness: 6-Hardness; Color: Black and Brown.
